Friday, February 18, 2005 INTER CRUISE THROUGH TO CUP SEMIS Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:27:12 MILAN - The Nerazzurri ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over local rivals Atalanta at the Meazza on Wednesday to qualify for the Coppa Italia semi-finals and a two-legged clash with either Cagliari or Sampdoria, who meet on 17 March. Recoba, Emre and Cruz added to Obafemi Martins' goal from the first leg and stretch the Nerazzurri's unbeaten run in all competitions to thirty-eight matches. Edgar Davids went close to his first goal for Inter when his long-range shot crashed onto the crossbar on 29 minutes. It was a taste of things to come as Alvaro Recoba opened the scoring just after the half-hour. The Uruguayan cut out an Atalanta attack, ran with the ball for over forty yards, played a defence-splitting ball to Cruz then raced into the box to meet the return pass and slot his 65th Nerazzurri goal into an open net. Inter's second was just as spectacular. Emre received just inside the Atalanta half then dribbled two opponents in a mazy run on goal then beat Calderoni with a crisp, low shot. Argentine striker Julio Cruz made extra sure of qualification early in the second half, beating his marker to meet Recoba's pin-point left-wing cross and head into the far corner. MILAN - Inter came back from behind to draw 1-1 with Chievo at the Giuseppe Meazza on Saturday night. Obafemi Martins grabbed a late equaliser after Mandelli fired the visitors into a second-half lead. The result sees Mancini's Inter set a new club record of twenty Serie A matches without defeat after last weekend's draw in Reggio Calabria equalled Alfredo Foni's long run of positive results in the Scudetto-winning 1952-53 season. Including all competitions, the Nerazzurri are now unbeaten in thirty-two games. A low-key first half saw both sides hit the woodwork, Tiribocchi's shot on the turn coming off the crossbar early on before Recoba rattled the post with a trademark free kick in added time. Inter continued to press hard for an opener after the restart and Christian Vieri had a goal ruled out for offside on 58 minutes, but, constantly dangerous on the counter-attack, the Gialloblu took the lead on 73 minutes when Mandelli found the net with a first-time shot from a Baronio corner. Obafemi Martins levelled seven minutes from time, getting on the end of Recoba's cross-shot then creating a yard of space before slotting into an open goal. Chievo could have won it late on when former Inter winger Luciano combined with Amauri then saw his diagonal shot come off the crossbar. Inter are in Coppa Italia action this Thursday with a quarter-final first leg away to Atalanta, then it's Palermo away in the league next Sunday evening. The Nigerian put Inter in front on 82 minutes, steering past Ferron after receiving Stankovic's ball over the Bologna defence, then saved the best till last with an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box which screamed into the top right-hand corner.Inter face the winners of Atalanta v Juventus in the quarter-finals. LIVORNO - Inter showed character and determination to keep a spirited Livorno side at bay and win their first match of 2005 by two goals to nil thanks to efforts in each half from Materazzi and Vieri. Adriano squandered a chance to give the Nerazzurri a 25th-minute lead at the Armando Picchi Stadium, pulling his spot kick wide of the right post after Alessandro Lucarelli handled the ball in the Tuscan penalty box. But Marco Materazzi, on for an injured Mihajlovic, made amends just before the half-time break with a far-post header from Andy van der Meyde's corner. Inter were awarded a second penalty with a quarter of an hour remaining after Giallombardo brought down van der Meyde. Christian Vieri obliged, beating Amelia with a fiercely-struck shot to take his tally for the season to seven goals. The victory sees the Nerazzurri remain fourth in the Serie A table along with this Sunday's opponents Sampdoria, who beat third-placed Udinese 2-0.
